At the age of twenty-two, Russ began his career in football as a part-time unpaid Recruiting Intern with the UCLA Bruins under Recruiting Coordinator Bill Rees. After a season at UCLA, Russ landed a position with, at that time, the Los Angeles Rams as a Pro Scouting Intern, under Jack Faulkner. Russ moved from an unpaid intern to a scouting administrator from 1994 to 1998 and learned from some of the best football minds – Jack Faulkner, Dick Vermeil, Mike White, Bud Carson, Charley Armey and Nick Aliotti. After leaving the Rams following the 1998 NFL Draft, Russ founded GM Jr Scouting and published his first annual GM Jr’s Guide to the NFL Draft (“The Guide”), starting with the 1999 NFL Draft. In addition to publishing The Guide, Russ was hired by the XFL as an East Coast Scout. After the initial publication after the 1999 NFL Draft, he expanded into television as an Editorial Consultant on the CBS Sports’ NFL Today Show. For two years, he analyzed NFL games and provided statistical breakdowns, game analysis and background information to Jim Nantz, Mike Ditka, Jerry Glanville and other on-air talent for use on pre-game, half-time and post-game shows.
Two years later, Russ was hired by the Cleveland Browns as its Midwest Blesto Scout. In that position, Russ evaluated all senior players at over 70 Midwest colleges and universities. He was recognized as having found Billy Cundiff in the fall of 2001, rating him as a future starting NFL place kicker. Russ resumed publishing The Guide after resigning from the Browns after the 2004 NFL Draft. The success of The Guide let to Russ being hired by The Sporting News to provide all NFL content for the Yearbook, website and magazine in 2007 (Click on this link to see the BIO article from the 2007 Sporting News Draft Guide - Click here to download the PDF). After the 2012 NFL Draft Russ then provided the same coverage for the National Football Post and Sports On Earth.
Due to Russ’s thorough and unique analysis, he was hired as the NFL Draft Expert for the Big Ten Network while also appearing on numerous other television and radio shows across the US.
While continuing to run GM Jr. Scouting, Russ was hired to be the U.S. College Scouting Director for the Montreal Alouettes in 2013 and continues in that role presently.
Russ currently resides in Chicago, Illinois with his wife and daughter.
